What set these football players apart?
I’m talking Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, or Dick Butkus. What made these players so unique? Don’t take this wrong, I certainly agree they were all incredible players, but what exactly set these old school football players apart from todays players? I’m looking for more specific things, thanks to all who answer.
Sayers and Butkus are alike, in that, if knee surgery had been advanced like it is today they would have had much longer careers, back then when doctors performed knee surgey on a player, that leg was pretty much shot. Now with micro surgery and authroscopic surgery a player can be back on the field in six weeks and pretty much with no drop off in ability. Butkus was playing on the knees of a sixty year old man at the end of his career and still striking fear in opponets and Sayers game was in his cuts and moves, he could no longer do those moves after knee surgery. As far as Sweetness, he was just physically a beast, he used to punish tacklers, never looked for the sidelines, yet had a remakedly long career for someone who ran in all that traffic. He was a warrior from a bygone era.He played the game like a rookie trying to earn a spot on the team, even though he was a sure first ballot Hall of Famer.
